Psalm 91: The Psalm of Divine Protection

Did you know Psalm 91 is often referred to as God’s covenant of protection? It’s a powerful scripture filled with promises of safety, peace, and divine care.

Recently, I had an experience that brought this Psalm to life in a new way. It started with a simple question:

“Have you anointed J’s corner?”

I hadn’t. And honestly, I hadn’t even thought about it. This question got me reflecting:

  • Why wasn’t anointing J’s corner my first priority?
  • Why do we physically anoint a place or a person?
  • And how exactly should I go about it?

Seeking God’s Guidance

A dear friend had previously anointed my old home, so my initial thought was to ask her for help. But God reminded me of something important: I should go to Him first. Instead of running to others, I needed to lean on Him for wisdom and direction.

So, I dove into scripture, sought advice, and prayed for guidance. I decided to anoint J’s corner that Friday morning. With the decision made, I felt a sense of peace.

The next day, my friend told me she would be at J’s corner on Friday to help. I smiled, thinking God had sent her to assist. But moments later, she texted to say she couldn’t make it.

And there it was again—God teaching me to rely on Him alone. That Friday morning was extraordinary. It became a personal moment between me and the Ultimate Protector.

Learning About Psalm 91

Through this journey, I discovered not only the significance of anointing but also the depth of God’s protection as declared in Psalm 91. This chapter is a beautiful reminder of how God shelters, shields, and defends those who trust in Him.

A Psalm 91 Prayer for Protection

Here’s a prayer inspired by Psalm 91 and the Holy Spirit:

I dwell in the shelter of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He is my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust.
He saves me and covers me with His feathers; under His wings, I find refuge. His faithfulness is my shield and rampart.
I do not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day, the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at my side, but it will not come near me. I will observe with my eyes the punishment of the wicked.

The Lord is my refuge; I make the Most High my dwelling. No harm will overtake me; no disaster will come near my tent. He commands His angels concerning me to guard me in all my ways. They lift me up in their hands so I will not strike my foot against a stone.
I will tread on the lion and the cobra; I will trample the great lion and the serpent.

Because I love You, Lord, You rescue and protect me. I acknowledge Your name. I call on You, and You answer me. You are with me in trouble; You deliver and honour me. With long life, You satisfy me and show me Your salvation.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
